Fish make attractive pets, but buying an aquarium tank for them can be expensive. Which type of tank do you buy? Where do you buy it? What type of tanks is best for certain fish? The answers may surprise you. Choosing a tank isn't as simple as it seems.
Taking care of fish can be an expensive process. Despite this, there are many ways to find a bargain on fish products. The most expensive part of caring for fish is the tank. Many people end up spending more than $60 dollars on a fish tank at specialty stores. This is too much, and if you do your homework you can find good deals for low prices. Used tanks are a great bargain.
When buying a used tank, you want to make sure it doesn't have glass which is cracked or broken. This sounds like common sense, but many people miss this important factor. If someone wants to give you a broken tank for free, and the costs for repairing it are cheap, then accept it. But don't pay for it.
You never want to purchase a glass tank which is chipped. Even if it is a small chip, you don't want to run the risk of the glass breaking and splashing water all over the floor and killing your fish. Some species of fish are expensive, and as your pets you don't want them dying. You also want to avoid bare tanks. Tanks for fish need additional accessories, unless you are buying it for a gerbil, snake, or other small animals.
When you have purchased your tank, take a good look at it to make sure the silicone is in good condition. You also want to make sure the silicone is not yellow or fragile. If you find that the silicone in the tank is weak, it would be best to replace it with a new coating. The older silicone will not stick with the new coating, and if you try to mix the two the tank may leak.
There are many places where you can find a bargain on fish tanks. Unfortunately, your local fish store isn't likely one of them. Thrift stores or yard sales are good places to find used aquarium tanks. Try looking in your local newspaper under classified ads to see if anyone is selling them. Many websites also offer great deals on fish tanks. Before making a decision, shop around and see what is available. You can always get a good deal if you know where to look.
