Things to consider when getting a new dog.

When you bring home your puppy or dog, there are certain diseases which they may get which can be life threatening. Some of these diseases are common for both dogs and humans, while others are distinct. There are many things you can do to both treat and avoid many of the ailments discussed below.

Many of the ailments dogs suffer from cannot be transferred between them and humans. But there are some exceptions to this rule. Rabies is a disease which can be transferred to humans from bites they receive from animals, and this also includes dogs.

Rabies is a disease which can be fatal. Because of this, you should avoid physical contact with strange dogs, and check for rabies before purchasing your dog. Some states require that your dog be vaccinated against rabies.

Another disease which can be transferred from dogs to humans is Parasites. Dogs can transfer roundworms or tapeworms through their feces or saliva. If you keep your dog outside, it is important to give him medical checkups to make sure he doesn't have this condition. One of the most dangerous types of parasites dogs suffer from is heartworms, which can be fatal if not treated with medication.

There are also many foods you want to avoid feeding your dog, and you want to make sure they don't eat it accidentally. Dogs like chocolate, but in large enough doses it is toxic to them. Chocolate contains a substance called Theo bromine. Dogs cannot digest this substance properly, and because of this it can be fatal to them.

Grapes are also harmful to dogs, despite the fact they are perfectly ok for humans. Dogs that eat grapes can have massive kidney failure, and the same is true for raisins. Even one grape or raisin is capable of killing a small dog. Because of this, you don't want to give your dog any grapes or raisins or food that has them mixed in.

Certain types of nuts like Macadamia can be dangerous to dogs, and can cause tumors or other abdominal problems. Alcohol doesn't kill dogs or poison them in small amounts, but will have the same effects as they do on humans. It is best for dogs to just drink water. Antifreeze is extremely dangerous to dogs, and they are attracted to it. You want to keep it away from your dog at all times.

If you find your dog getting sick or ill, take him to the veterinarian immediately so that they can treat the dog. In case a veterinarian isn't available, keep medicines and other materials handy which can allow you to treat your dog.
