Choosing the right cage for guinea pigs. |
When you purchase a pet guinea pig, you want to make sure you choose the best cage possible. The cage is the home of the guinea pig, and you don't want to choose the wrong cage or put it in a place which is hazardous to them. There are many problems with outdoor cages.
You want to keep the temperature in the cage constant. The temperature should be from 64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. If the temperature falls to low, you guinea will quickly freeze to death. This is another reason why keeping a cage outside is a bad idea.
Extremes in weather could be dangerous to your guinea pig. It is best to keep them indoors. If you do have to place the guinea pig cage outside, keep it off the ground so your pet doesn't fall prey to predators such as cats or dogs.
If you place your cage indoors, you never want to place it in the laundry room. This can be extremely dangerous to the guinea pig. A laundry room which is being used constantly has many changes in temperature which can be hazardous to guinea pigs. You have to remember that they need to be in an area with constant temperature.
Placing the cage in the garage is the same as placing it outside. It won't provide your guinea pig with any protection against weather extremes. You also want to make sure you place the cage in an area which is brightly lit. Guinea pigs don't like being in dark areas.
Many people make the mistake of purchasing guinea pig cages from the pet store. When you buy from a pet store, you can expect to pay outrageous prices. A cage for guinea pigs can run from $70 to $100, too much for what is basically a glass box. Many cages purchased in stores are also poorly built. They have wood in them which holds the smell of the guinea pig's urine, or they will have metal parts which hurt their feet.
The cheapest option for a guinea pig cage is to build your own. It is easier than it sounds. There are many places you can find parts for less than $15. You may even want to check at thrift stores to see if they have any cheap parts which can be used to build your cage. You can modify it the way you want, for an extremely low price.
